City Shopping

The main shopping center of Shillong is Police Bazar. There are a number of shops which cater to all interests, modern and traditional. There are a number of restaurants located all over the city catering various cuisines which includes local ethnic food.

Village markets

VillaMarketge markets are very colourful and very interesting in all districts of Meghalaya. The items of tourist interest which can be bought are mats, stplit bamboo stools and knives. If inclined, a range of local fruits are available to satisfy one's curiousty.

Listed below are some products of Meghalaya which deserves a mention for their uniqueness to this state and for the pure novelty they offer. Most of them will more than make adequate souveniers or gifts.

Khasi locks -The Khasi lock is unique in the sense that the key is screwed into the locking mechanism to lock or unlock. Each key is unique to its own lock.

Orange Honey -Khasis, traditionally are avid beekeepers and produce very good honey. In the southern slopes namely, Cherrapunjee & Mawsynram, there are large orange plantations. During flowering of these orange trees, the bees get their nectar mainly from these orange blossoms. The bees then produce the beautifully flavoured Orange Honey.

Black pepper -The black pepper of this region has bKwaieen exported to other parts of India from time immemorial. They have a very strong flavour and are often used for medicinal pwposes.

Turmeric -One of the best turmeric available in the market is from the Jaintia Hills, known for its a strong flavour and medicinal value.

Megam Khok -A fine double-woven bamboo basket with waterproofing leaves pressed between the two layers. It was so well made that the British used this basket in many of their expeditions. Traditionally, the Garos used it to store rice.

Khasi Bows and Arrows -Archery is the traditional sport of the Khasis , hence today, the bows and arrows are popular souvenier items.

Handloom & Handicrafts -The local markets of BasketShillong and Tura are scattered with shops selling mainly handloom products along with a few handicraft items.

Khasi knives -The Khasis are very good with their iron work and exported iron balls or ingots which even found their way to the markets of Calcutta. This tradition is represented in their household tools and implements, one of which is the foldable kitchen knife and is used for almost any purpose.

Local music -As is true with the people of the Northeast in general, the people of Meghalaya are also musically inclined Many local musicians, traditional and modern, release a wide variety of music, which is available in the local markets. Audio CD's, cassettes and even music videos are available in plenty for those interested.
