Nartiang and Jowai

NGroveartiang, famous for its monoliths, is 63 kms. from Shillong. A large number of monoliths have been erected here near the local market (Iaw Mawlong), which can very aptly be described as a Garden of Monoliths. The tallest monolith towers to a height of 8 meters having a breath of 2 meters and a thickness of 0.46 meters. It is believed that the legendary Jaintia hero Mar Phalyngki was asked by the then Jaintia King to erect them. On a hill top close to the ruins of the Jaintia kings summer residence, lies the Durga temple. This temple is said to have been built way back in the sixteenth century by a Jaintia king who had convertDurga Templeed to Hinduism. The temple is constructed in a typical Jaintia house style, with a central pillar.

A short walk from the Durga temple towards the market reveals a small Shiv temple that has some interesting artifacts. 19 kms. from Nartiang is Jowai, the district headquarters of Jaintia Hills. Jowai is a large town today surrounding by the Myntdu river. There are a lot of interesting places to see around Jowai. Very near the bus station on the banks of the river Syntu Ksiar (Golden flower), a monument has been built for U Kiang Nongbah, a freedom fighter who led a Jaintia rebellion against the British in 1863.

On the Jowai – Muktapur road, 16 kms. away is a bridge made of huge stone slabs. This bridge is believed to have been built by Mar Phalyngki and U Luh Lyngskor Lamare. This was a route taken by the Jaintia king on his journey from his summer places at Nartiang and Jaitiapur respectively.Thadlaskein Lake

10 kilometers from Jowai on the Shillong/Jowai road is a beautiful man madeu kiang nongbah lake called Thadlaskein Lake built by Sajar Nangli and his followers. This lake has been further developed and boating facilities are available. The Orchid Inn with a restaurant and staying facilities is opposite the lake and is also close to Nartiang.

The story of how the market came to Nartiang from Raliang:

It is said that earlier there was no market in Nartiang. The legendary hero U Mar Phalyngki had gone to visit his wife in Raliang village which had a big market. On his return to Nartiang it was raining heavily so he asked his mother-in-law for a rain shield. The mother-in-law jokingly asked him to take the flat stone from the Market to Raliang. Mar Phalyngki picked up this big stone and using it as a rain shield came to Nartiang. From then on the market in Raliang ceased and came to Nartiang. All traditional markets had these stones which has religious significance.
